Roy Keane has turned down the opportunity of managing Celtic in favour of staying as assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland.

The 42-year-old has told his former club not to consider him for the role after national boss Martin O’Neill requested he clarify his position.

Keane previously managed both Sunderland and Ipswich Town and actually finished his playing career at Celtic Park. He had become strong favourite for the vacancy following talks with Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

The Irish are due to travel to the United States on Wednesday ahead of forthcoming friendlies with Costa Rica and Portugal and were keen for a resolution in the matter.
