Injury-plagued defender John Kennedy will receive a boost when he is named in Celtic’s European squad for the Champions League, according to reports.

Kennedy (pictured above), 23, suffered a knee injury while making his Scotland debut in March 2004 and hasn’t played since. But, after three operations on his ligaments, he is now in full training and close to returning to the first-team picture.

While boss Gordon Strachan is deciding his squad, there is still doubt over who Celtic will actually face in the Champions League

Portuguese-side Gil Vicente launched a civil case in an attempt to overturn their relegation – despite it being against FIFA rules – which could lead to Benfica, who are in Group F along with Celtic, Manchester United and FC Copenhagen, and Porto being booted out of European competition.

William Gaillard, of UEFA, said: ‘The ultimate sanction is that the Portuguese national team and all their clubs are banned from all competitions by FIFA.’

Ajax are favourites to replace Benfica in Group F, if FIFA carry-out their threat.
