If you were to listen to the reporters and journalists from Sky Sports, every football player and manager want’s to play or manage in the English Premier League.

They sell the league as some sort of ‘Promised Land’ and as the ‘Best League in the World’ when, in truth, many just see it as a huge payday.

Look, I do not deny that the standard of the league is good. Of course, it is, but the narrative that it is every player and manager’s dream to play and manage there is simply untrue.

Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Frank Ribery and a whole host of footballing royalty have managed to get by ok without going to England.

So why is it that whenever a managerial job in the EPL comes up, the automatic assumption of the media is that Ange would be interested in going there?

Money? Better players? Of course, all of this is attractive but former Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish sums it up perfectly here.

As reported by The Standard, Dalglish said, “He’s [Postecoglou] done brilliantly at Celtic and it’s attracted people from down south to say ‘come down here’.

“But are you trying to say Celtic’s not as big an adventure as some of the clubs that were allegedly interested in him?

“Why would he go down to the Premier League and get relegated or to a team threatened by relegation?

“He’d rather be at Celtic playing to win trophies.”

Winning trophies. There is the key words.

Not every manager or player that goes on to play in England wins honours. In fact, the vast majority don’t.

They will be wealthier, of that, there is no doubt, but many players and managers hold silverware far and above the need for a paycheck.

And that is what Ange is all about. He is a football purist. He plays the game to win.

The money is a by-product and that is why Ange will not chase a club that is in danger of relegation.

It goes against all his footballing principles.
