Celtic came from two-goals down to lead despite missing a penalty before eventually being denied by an injury-time equaliser in a 3-3 draw at Motherwell.

The hosts took an early advantage through John Sutton and Zaine Francis-Angol doubled it before Anthony Stokes and Georgios Samaras replied either side of the break.

Substitute Leigh Griffiths then gave the visitors the lead with just four minutes remaining, only for Sutton to rescue a late point in added time.

Manager Neil Lennon awarded John Herron a first senior start but it was Samaras soon volleying over before Efe Ambrose missed a long clearance and Sutton fired low under Fraser Forster.

A mistake from Beram Kayal almost allowed the Steelmen another had the covering Ambrose not blocked from Estonian forward Henri Anier.

Kayal recovered to allow Scott Brown to have a shot charged down by Stephen McManus before Stokes was brought down inside the area by Iain Vigurs. But Kris Commons’ penalty was turned aside by Gunnar Neilsen.

Boosted by that escape the hosts continued to threaten and Francis-Angol took advantage of uncertain defending from the visitors to poke in their second goal.

However, Stokes immediately turned inside the box and chipped past Neilsen to reply moments before the break.

Both Commons and Virgil van Dijk tried efforts at the start of the second-half, while Kayal cleared off the line at the other end before Samaras turned in Stokes’ effort to equalise.

Celtic attacked again and Dutchman van Dijk headed over before Kayal, Brown and then Commons forced keeper Neilsen into action.

Leading scorer Commons also hoisted over and Forster covered the threat of both Vigurs and Anier, until Griffiths prodded home from inside the area with less than five minutes remaining.

But Motherwell came back with Sutton getting on the end of substitute Lionel Ainsworth’s cross to the far post for a stoppage-time equaliser.
