Legend tips Celtic star to beat teammate Callum McGregor to player of the year awards

|

Celtic legend and Evening Times columnist Davie Hay reckons James Forrest is Celtic’s player of the year this season, just beating midfielder Callum McGregor to the honour.

The duo have arguably been the two stand-outs in the starting eleven throughout 2018/19, contributing massively to our third treble tilt in a row.

Forrest has scored a magnificent 17 goals and incredibly assisted 20 more, while McGregor has provided the midfield anchor we’ve needed to win the vast majority of our games since last summer.

Hay reckons that’s Forrest’s knack of scoring big goals in big games just gives him the edge over his Scotland international teammate.

Writing in The Evening Times, he said:

For me, he [James Forrest] has been Celtic’s best player for the past 18 months. It’s between James and Callum McGregor for Player of the Year and I think James is just ahead.

It’s been said so often that not only does he score spectacular goals, he gets them in the big games.

If you watch the best of James Forrest, it’s some highlight reel.

He has scored in Champions League qualifiers, the winner on one occasion, against Rangers, semi-finals and in three League Cup finals, all of which Celtic have won.

This is a serious footballer.

Forrest has come a long way from the dark days at Celtic when he was hugely criticised by supporters and on the verge of letting his contract expire.

Over the last 2 years though he’s matured into a wonderful play who not only possesses pace and skill, but also excellent decision making and exceptional finishing ability.

He’s now the complete package and will deserve any awards that come his way before the end of the season at club or national level.

I reckon he’s been the best player in the country this season.
