Lennon condemns online trolls. And twitter proves his point

|

Neil Lennon took to his press conference today to have a pop at the online trolling culture after referee, Mike Dean, received death threats after getting a red card decision wrong in the West Ham versus Fulham match at the weekend.

Lennon himself is no stranger to online abuse with the constant haranguing of the Celtic manager on Celtic’s twitter feed with the “Stop Sign Lennon” photo’s littering ever single thread. But Lennon, talking more generally of online  abuse said, “I just think it’s appalling. Absolutely appalling.

“This is again, the days we live in. I’m sick of it and fed up with it.

“Fed up with the racist abuse players are suffering from, or anybody in any walk of life. It’s just disgusting.

“For Mike, I just hope he has his family around him and the referee’s association with full support from managers and players in the game.

“He’s an excellent referee and has been for a long, long time.

“I’ve seen associations talking a lot about these social media platforms and they’re not doing enough to stop this.

“There’s no accountability and people can basically say what they want.

“It’s against the law and they don’t know the damage they’re doing to these individuals, who are just out there trying to entertain and make the game better, and obviously referee the game in the best way possible.”

And then we have the those on the official Celtic twitter feeds with the relentless photo campaign there were literally dozens of these posts:

And then we have those that think they are comedians:

And in true Twitter fashion, the online abuse on The Daily Record and Celtic FC tweets really proved Lennon’s point.  The sustained online campaign against Lennon by some fans has been nothing short of embarrassing and needs to stop, or no top manager will touch the Parkhead hot seat.
