With 2019/20 being prematurely drawn to a close and Celtic declared champions, preparations have begun for next season and one of the first names on the list, ominously, is a centre-half according to a report in The Scottish Sun.

The initial story comes from Belgium and featured in Le Soir, Aleksandar Vukotic, a towering Serb, is currently plying his trade with Waasland-Beveren and is the man believed to be lined up for a move to the Hoops.

Celtic’s defence has consistently been the best in the league and last year was no exception with just 19 goals conceded in 30 games following the summer acquisitions of Christopher Jullien and Fraser Forster, the latter now having an improved chance of returning to Parkhead following reports of Southampton suffering financial difficulties.

Recent reports, however, have linked central defensive mainstay, Kristoffer Ajer, with a move away from Celtic and after January rumours proposed that Leicester City were preparing a bid for the Norwegian international his agent – on an almost weekly basis – continues to be keen to see his client make the move, much to Neil Lennon’s chagrin.

Ajer is entering into the final year of his contract and with him originally arriving on a free contract any money made from his sale is profit, so if a sizeable offer is received, regardless of his qualities, it would make good sense to let him leave.

Whether or not the relatively unknown Vukotic possesses the same qualities on the ball as Ajer is yet to be seen but if he makes a similar impact to last summer’s defensive arrivals, the champion’s defence of the Premiership title will remain in safe hands.
