Centre-back Daniel Majstorovic may be the wrong side of 30, but Neil Lennon is convinced the Sweden international could still play do a job for Celtic for three or four years.

The 33-year-old, who negotiated a release from his contract with AEK Athens and has been capped 35 times by his country, is expected to sign a two-year contract with Celtic as Lennon looks to add experience to the defence.

The Evening Times quoted Lennon as saying: “I have no worries at all about his age. Provided he has not suffered any problems – and Daniel’s injury record looks okay – the modern-day player at 33 can play here for another three or four years, never mind two.

“He is a presence, comfortable on the ball, and will head it in both boxes. I don’t think we have had one of Daniel’s type for a while. He is also very experienced. We missed out on Sol Campbell, and I want an experienced head in there. I think Daniel will be fine for the job. He has had a decent career up until now, and I hope he continues that here.”

Before joining AIK in 2008, Majstorovic has previously played for Basel, Twente, Malmo, Vasteras, Fortuna Koln and Brommapojkarna. Assuming he passes a medical and agrees the small print, Majstorovic could be available for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Utrecht.

The imminent signing of Majstorovic is thought to be one of the reasons Darren O’Dea is currently in Ipswich, trying to arrange a loan move. Lennon recently admitted he couldn’t guarantee the Ireland international first-team football and said it would be beneficial for the player to make short-term move to a club where he would get time on the pitch.
