Thank God for small mercies.

When Celtic were in the doldrums last season and it looked like Ange Postecoglou was inheriting a disaster, in fact, scratch that.

Ange Postecoglou DID inherit an absolute disaster but it could have been a lot worse according to Mark Guidi.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Guidi said, “The other thing about him is his loyalty to the club.

“Callum McGregor could have gone and Brendan Rodgers would have taken him in a heartbeat.

“Even up to the summer there he would have taken him in a heartbeat for £20 million quid.

“But Callum McGregor has shown that loyalty.  If he really pushed and wanted to rock the boat he could have got a move and wouldn’t have been short of suitors.

“And he has been rewarded because make no mistake, to captain Celtic is a massive that you shouldn’t take lightly.

“Something you shouldn’t take for granted.

“And if you’re not up to it, you’ll be quickly found out and the captaincy will be taken off you.

“I think it’s just given him that that new challenge that he’s probably needed because he was stale last season.”

Could you imagine the uproar if Celtic entertained that move especially after losing Scott Brown to Aberdeen and a raft of other top team stars were working their ticket out of the club.

At the start of the piece I said thank God for small mercies.

I think I meant thank God for a huge miracle because McGregor could have walked and no one could have blamed him.

But he didn’t and look at him now.

Proudly leading the club onwards to, hopefully, the first of many titles.
