Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has followed up his captain in heavily criticising Mikael Lustig for celebrating Celtic’s Scottish League Cup win in front of Lewis Ferguson on Sunday.
Lustig and Scott Brown were clearly enjoying themselves towards the end of the Hoops’ momentous 1-0 cup win at Hampden, taking the time to wind up both Ferguson and Graeme Shinnie.
It’s something that the Aberdeen captain couldn’t help moaning about after the match and McInnes was similarly upset.
As quoted by The Daily Record, the Dons boss said:
I felt his reaction to young Lewis Ferguson was unnecessary. A grown man running up into Lewis’s face and laughing and all the rest of it.
We have seen players from other clubs be yellow-carded for that and a lot made of it. I thought he was trying to goad young Lewis and there was no need for it.
Lewis dealt with it well. He was the grown up in the situation. It was just disappointing.
Clearly losing another final to Celtic was all a bit too much for Aberdeen and their key personnel.
I’m not sure I would be too happy if I was Lewis Ferguson, hearing his captain and manager patronise him so much. He might be a young player but he’s surely more than capable of dealing with a little bit of gloating in a major cup final.
The Dons will have to find a winning mentality to achieve their ambitions and win these matches, not weep in the press after the fact.
