It was a strange outburst that caught the attention of some portions of the media.

After his sides 1-0 humbling at the hands of Sparta Prague in the Europa League, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard complained that to compete at the level his team are playing at, the club will need to spend money, “To compete with the teams we’re playing against, we have to spend big money.

“In the last two transfer windows we haven’t spent a penny.

“There has to be some realism there, we can’t compete against these teams on their own patch without spending.

“There has to be some common sense when you’re judging us from the outside.”

One can only guess that he’s looked across the city and purred over the transfer business Ange Postecoglou and has been allowed to oversee and the Rangers manager has not liked it.

Well it seems that Gerrard doesn’t need to worry about people judging him from the outside as, according to Phil Mac Giolla Bhain, Gerrard was hauled over the coals for his public dig at the Ibrox board.

Phil wrote on his blog tonight that according to an ‘impeccable source’ there was unhappy goings on behind the closed doors at Ibrox, “I was told that there was a free and frank exchange of views within the Sevco firmament at the weekend.

“Apparently [David Graham] had been despatched to reprimand [Steven Gerrard] to remind the Liverpool legend that he had to stick to the script when speaking to the media.

“My information is that  (Rangers PR Chief David Graham) was instead taken aback when he encountered the unfiltering offering of Scouse vernacular in reply.

“Something along the lines of he should go away in an industrial sense along with the white horse he rode in on.”

Which is strange as just this morning The Daily Record reporter Keith Jackson, also seemed to imply that all was not well at Ibrox in his column today when he said, “If Gerrard suspects his own ambitions are not being matched at the top of the stairs then it won’t be just his starting XI which feels a little unsettled.”

Could there be trouble in the water at Ibrox that explains the teams stuttering start to the season?
