Interim Celtic manager Neil Lennon is keen on signing striker Gary Hooper this summer if he is given the permanent job at Celtic Park, according to The Scottish Sun.

The paper say Lennon sees Hooper as the kind of striker Celtic need to boost the squad’s attack next season as we attempt to secure a ninth Scottish league title in a row.

They also report that Hooper himself is keen on making a return to Glasgow after leaving Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer at the end of the English Championship season.

The 31-year-old scored 82 goals and assisted 30 more in a successful three-year spell working under Lennon between 2010 and 2013.

He’s failed to find that kind of consistency at Norwich City and Wednesday since though and has missed the vast majority of the 2018/19 season due to injury.

As a budget signing we could probably do worse, but there would be serious question marks about his ability in comparison to his first spell at the club.

The striking position is one that needs strengthened with Timo Weah and Oliver Burke due to head back to their parent clubs this summer.

Odsonne Edouard is and would remain a clear first choice but could Hooper provide the team with the depth needed to compete in multiple competitions?

Should Celtic make a move for Gary Hooper this summer? Have your say in the comments below…

  • Many people would see it as a backward step many wouldn’t be happy the way he left Celtic however I would have him back he knows what the club is all about and knows how to score goals…. Bring him back on a rolling contract see how he fairs. Nothing ventured nothing gained HH ????????

    • Johnybhoy1967, The way he left Celtic? There was nothing wrong with the way he left!
He was basically heralded out. He was professional the whole way through.

  • No chance he’s been rubbish for past 3 or 4 seasons now be lucky to get a game for hearts or aberdeen not going to make it 9 in a row with signings like that.

    • We need to go forward not backwards am afraid we need new signings that will lead us into Europe and ten in a row it’s all about money now and ambition

  • I’d welcome Hopper Back as long as shirt no 88 was on his back Super Hoopy fringe only till he proves himself

  • Not for me sorry.I liked him first time around but not now hope as a club we are aiming higher than that

  • NO! We Need To Be Thinking Higher. But If He Ends Up In The Hoops Again We’ll Be Chanting His Name As Hopefully He Bangs Them In.

    ???? Hurry Back Leigh ????

  • Him and commons were superb together i reckon hoopers worth a go definitely!!!what have we got to lose!!!! Every one knows that was Brendens team that won the league lenny god bless. Took over a good squad of players.and then got it back trying to play his style. Draws loads of slow football and actually nearly into the Last 2 games meant something!!!! Now we can go io ibrox and party. Not because of Lenny. But Brendan’s squad I’d have him back in a flash. One of celtiics best ever managers !! Deffo ! I wouldn’t know who to pick as manager but he would beat more teams with Hooper in the squad already than without him. Yeah take the mick but Gary’s the bhoy for me .HH !!!
