Neil Lennon wants to build his Celtic team around one player if he gets the job permanently

Scott Brown will remain Celtic’s main man if Neil Lennon is given the job on a permanent basis, as reported by The Daily Record.

Many of Lennon’s comments about the club since taking over from Brendan Rodgers have been very much focused on immediate challenges, but this week he’s been answering questions on what the future of the team might look like if he is handed the reins beyond the end of this season.

And he seems to be keen on making sure any new squad still relies on an old favourite – Broony.

Asked if the captain is a player he would build a new first-team around, Lennon told The Daily Record:

Absolutely. He is so integral to this club and this dressing room, on and off the field. He’s still fit as a fiddle and he is very experienced.

If he walks on a tight line, then so be it. Some of us did. He knows the boundaries to work in.

He played brilliantly again on Sunday and in games like that you really need him.

I am really glad for everyone [he stayed], but for him especially. He has settled down and is playing some great football at the minute.

Two or three months ago, there was all this self-doubt, all this uncertainty about his future. You could see that in his performances as well. But he is a great captain and a great leader.

Whether Lennon even gets the job is currently up in the air but it’s clear that if he does, not much will be changing at Celtic Park apart from investment into the squad.

So far we haven’t played excellent football under the new boss but we haven’t been beaten yet and have won our biggest matches.

Lennon understands that this winning mentality is hard to forge and that Brown instils it more than anyone else in the squad, so it’s no surprise to hear he sees the captain as our most important player going forwards.

He may be 33 years old, but it’s clear he has plenty of football left to play at the club.
