This afternoon, Celtic prepare for their Scottish Cup semi final against Aberdeen in their quest for an historic quadruple treble. Never in the history of the Scottish game has such a scale of domination of domestic competitions been witnessed and it will, most likely, never be witnessed again.
Celtic has an incredible trophy laden history. With 51 League Titles, 39 Scottish Cups and 19 League Cups, Celtic’s record for trebles first began way back in season 66/67 under Jock Stein where the club participated in five competitions (Scottish League, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup, Glasgow Cup and European Cup), winning all and scoring a world record 196 goals in the process. A further treble followed in season 68/69 and it took until season 2000/01 when Martin O’Neil took the Bhoys to the elusive treble in his first season at the club.
A further sixteen years passed before Celtic achieved their next domestic treble under Brendan Rodgers in the infamous “Invincibles” season and since then, Celtic’s power and grip over the domestic game has never slipped after completing two more trebles over the following two seasons.
Lennon now has the chance to etch his name into the history books and gain immortality in the eyes of Celtic fans, if he takes his team, who are now beginning to find some much needed form, to the Scottish Cup Final against Heart of Midlothian in December.
