Brendan Rodgers was delighted with a winning start to the season as champions Celtic defeated Hearts 4-1 in their opening game.

Leigh Griffiths struck twice alongside Scott Sinclair and Callum McGregor, although the Celtic boss believes his side could have scored even more goals.

“We wanted to make a mark and I thought the players were absolutely brilliant,” Rodgers told BBC Scotland. “We had to be patient – Hearts had a good structure and organisation, they were tight and compact.

“It was a very, very good performance and the start we wanted,” he added. “Unfortunately we were only 1-0 up at half-time but we came out in the second half and created the chances. We got four and arguably could have got two or three more.”
