Many of Celtic’s main men have impressed this season, and though some have enjoyed mixed form, for the most part, Brendan Rodgers will be proud of his team.
However, one man that has struggled to make an impact this term ss Mikael Lustig. Given that it’s the final year of his contract, then, that naturally has indicated that his time at Celtic Park could be coming to an end.
However, that may not be the case. According to Swedish publication Fotboll Direkt, there’s a chance that he could remain at the club. They’re reporting that it’s likely that a new offer could be put on the table for him to stay at the club.
Whilst Lustig is a brilliant leader and he has been a fantastic servant for Celtic, the reality is that this would be a pretty poor move from Rodgers.
After all, mistakes have been commonplace in his game this season, and he’s really stood out as one of our worst defenders for much of the campaign. Particularly with Dedryck Boyata next to him, his flaws are exposed, and that’s only going to get worse.
At 31-years-old, the reality is that Lustig’s powers are fading, and he’s undeniably in the autumn of his career. Keeping him at Celtic Park would be a great gesture for a player that has given his all for the club, but would it be of much help to the Hoops on the field? Honestly, the answer is probably no.
Sometimes, you’ve just got to move on, and that’s arguably the case here.
