Pundit Davie Provan has hit out with needless stinging criticism of Celtic captain Scott Brown, less than 24 hours after he helped the Hoops win an eighth successive league title.

Brown won his 18th trophy with the club this weekend, 16 of which have been delivered while captain, but Provan has somehow decided this is deserving of critique rather than praise.

Writing in his Scottish Sun column, the Sky Sports commentator said:

Despite the silverware Broony’s piled up, he’s well down the list of proper Celtic players.

Thanks to fawning media coverage, his reputation has always outstripped his ability.

In a league where serious opposition has been absent for most of his Celtic career, he won the lottery when signing for Gordon Strachan. There was never a better time to join Celts.

If Brown isn’t among the most gifted Celtic captains, he has to be the luckiest.

How many of his predecessors have had it so easy? Certainly not the one we lost last week.

It’s a bizarre rant and pretty low to compare him to the late, great Billy McNeill, who only passed away recently.

I don’t think anyone has ever tried to compare Brown to the iconic Hoops legend and obviously rightly so. Why Provan feels the need to use that as a stick to beat Brown with is beyond me.

From a former player it’s an especially bitter tirade but of course it will all be water off of Brown’s back, who is well used to strange criticism and punditry.

I wonder if Provan will use upcoming potential Scottish Cup success as another weapon against the Hoops captain?

  • Provan has had his day mediocre at best as a footballer and mediocre as a journalist, always has a dig at the tic any chance he gets its wasn’t broonys fault the huns went bust and the standard dipped but he has proved himself to be a great captain and ambassador for the club, Broony doesn’t compare himself to King Billy so why provan decided to only he knows, sour grapes springs to mind not the mark of a true Celt like billy Mcneil RIP.

  • Scott Brown is a Celtic and Scotland legend like him or not he has more medals and caps than Davie Provan has had hot dinners . Not down too luck or Rangers going bust beat who was in front of him . Maybe not the most skillful player but neither was Billy McNeil who he compared him with . Both players played in a different era of the game but what is not up for question is that both are Celtic captains and legends.

  • Broony gives 100% every time he pulls on the hoops, he has been a great captain for the club and has proven his worth, davie provan was an average player who had a handful of excellent performances, as for comparing him to the late Billy McNeil there is not another captain who will achieve what Billy did, just remember davie scott has won 18 trophies in his time with us, how many did you win? Broony is on 8 in a row and on the verge of a third successive treble, they should change your job description from pundit to hundit as you seem to be all for the nomarks from govan.

  • Proven you are a discrace it’s sad you ever were in a hoops shirt.I have seen you as a player and let me saye you were no jinky by a long don’t compare brown to Billy just a cheap shot brown has bean great for this great club have you answer no.
