Pundit slates Celtic star after difficult season, says Hoops should regret not signing £3m man

|

Pundit Tam McManus thinks Oliver Burke has been woeful signing for Celtic this season, believing the club will also come to rue decisions like not bringing John McGinn to the club last summer.

Burke had an especially difficult match away to Rangers on Sunday, failing to make any impact in the match whatsoever and also fluffing a golden chance in the second half.

Initially looking bright on his arrival in January, he’s regressed badly in a Celtic shirt and will go back to West Bromwich Albion having left little fond memories for Hoops supporters.

McManus reckons he’s the pick of our poor signings over the last 18 months, writing in his Football Scotland column:

It’s a pool of players that looks in serious need of revamping. The recruitment at the club over the last 18 months has been absolutely embarrassing and that has contributed to the gap closing at the top just as much as Rangers improvement has.

Guys like Oliver Burke,Timothy Weah, Jeremy Toljan, Youssef Mulumbu and Jack Hendry have all been brought in and made absolutely no impact. Burke in particular has been a woeful signing.

When you consider that they didn’t give Hibs the £3million straight away for John McGinn, who in my opinion would have been a superb signing, they let a very talented player slip away who would have added real quality to the squad. McGinn’s performances at Aston Villa have undoubtedly proved that.

So serious mistakes have been made in the transfer market which simply cannot be repeated. Celtic got away with it this season to an extent. They won’t next season.

The former Hibs man is pretty harsh with his wording but his overall point is pretty sound considering the state of our recruitment recently.

There have been more bad signings than good and some of the panic signings have been absolutely baffling from Brendan Rodgers and his Head of Recruitment Lee Congerton.

Now both have left the club we will hopefully have a brighter future this summer.

As for Burke, he has exceptional physical attributes but his skill on the ball just isn’t at the standard we require.

We must do better in the upcoming transfer window.
