Former Hoops defender Mark Wilson reckons Neil Lennon should be given the permanent Celtic job before the Scottish Cup final at the end of the month, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
Lennon today guided his team to an eighth successive league title despite massive off the pitch upheaval in the wake of Brendan Rodgers’ departure to Leicester City in February.
Securing big results against the likes of Hearts, Rangers and Aberdeen, the Hoops have shown up when they’ve really needed to under the 47-year-old and Wilson feels the interim boss has done enough to be given the gig beyond the summer.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the pundit said:
Even under Neil’s watch there has been a split opinion about the performances but the right results have been achieved. Winning 3-0 at Pittodrie is an achievement in itself but he’s also beaten Rangers, Hearts and Kilmarnock.
The lack of goals which Celtic are conceding has also been down to Neil. I can’t see the rush to get rid of Neil. I’d like to know between now and the Scottish Cup final that he’ll get the job. It would give everyone a huge boost.
Celtic have to lose a cup game somewhere but I find it hard to believe they’re going to lose against Hearts.
But even if they did lose, I still think appointing Neil would be the right thing. They have given themselves enough time to think about it.
The announcement of Lennon as the club’s permanent manager may not have the full support of supporters, many of whom are yet to be convinced he is right man for the job.
However, the players seem right behind their current boss and love playing for him.
Would Lennon’s appointment give them a big confidence boost ahead of our ‘treble treble’ bid? It’s certainly possible.
It would also take a bit of pressure off everyone’s shoulders at Lennoxtown, allowing them to cut out all the noise surrounding the club and focus entirely on the Hearts task.
Most fans though are probably hoping the club demonstrate an extensive recruitment process has taken place before giving anyone the job, including Lennon. And that would probably come after the season ends.
