It is a tag Celtic fans always swear by, “The best fans in the World”. So much so that when Sepp Blatter awarded them the FIFA Fair Play award for their impeccable behaviour in Seville for the UEFA Cup Final in 2003, the tag has been worn like a badge of pride since then.
At the awards ceremony in Basle, Switzerland, CEO Peter Lawwell at the time said, “Celtic is a unique club with many thousands of fantastic supporters.
“This award is a tribute to all of them, as they showed in Seville last year, they are the best fans in the world.”
But speaking on PLZ Soccer live broadcast on YouTube, pundit Tam Cowan, told of his bemusement at the Celtic fans where only months after clinching an historic Quadruple Treble, many are now saying they won’t renew their season tickets, “Albeit it is too little too late getting a bit of form back and playing some decent stuff and scoring decent goals but you know I think it would maybe be a little bit better all round if the (Celtic) board came out and said ‘Neil Lennon ultimately no matter what you think about him, he was he was the manager of who clinched the historical quadruple treble, so we’re going to sack him we’re not going to punt and he’s going to be here till end of the season’.
“But then of course is the flip argument is that Celtic fans will say right away, Wait a minute. we can’t wait to get a manager at the last minute we should be getting the now giving him to the end of the season before next season resumes.
I must admit, it’s hard not to have a slight smile in my face when I keep hearing about Celtic fans who tell us that have the greatest fans in the world and how they would walk a million miles for one of their goals. You know a few weeks after a quadruple treble they’re talking about not going back and not renewing their season tickets. Utterly baffling.”
