Rangers icon tells Celtic who to appoint as manager this summer

|

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness thinks Celtic would be crazy not to appoint Neil Lennon as the club’s permanent manager, speaking to the channel earlier today.

Lennon was given the job until the end of the season in February after the dramatic exit of Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City.

In the time since he’s led the team on an undefeated streak that has clinched an eighth league title in a row and landed the team in another Scottish Cup Final.

Now on the brink of an unprecedented ‘treble treble’, Lennon has done just about a good a job as can be expected.

Souness reckons he must now be given the job ahead of the new season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Rangers icon said:

I worked with Neil Lennon for two years in television and he’s as good as anyone I’ve worked with.

We’re very similar in our thinking. I think he gets his from Martin O’Neill who got his from Brian Clough.

Neil Lennon knows his stuff. In fact, I hope they don’t employ him as a Rangers supporter!

But I want him to keep the job as he’s a good guy – and I mean that.

People might think it’s strange but we bonded very quickly when we worked together and I like him very much as an individual. They’d be crazy to get rid of him.

If Neil wins the treble how much better can it get? He has fulfilled what he could do.

Despite the success that Lennon has secured this season, he remains something of a divisive choice amongst supporters when considering who should take charge as we go for a ninth league title in a row next year.

Many would prefer a big name, elite appointment in the manner of Rodgers, someone who can maintain the high standards he set in his near three years at Celtic Park.

Lennon though isn’t the worst fall back option should such a move not come off. He’s only ever known success at Celtic and is a known quantity for everyone at the club.

Perhaps most importantly the players enjoy playing for him and that ultimately might end up being the reason the Hoops board go with him.
