Report claims Celtic ‘monitoring’ international striker

This is a strange one for me. Not because I don’t think the player is not good enough for Celtic but simply because I don’t see him getting into the first team ahead of Kyogo and Giakoumakis.

It has long been rumoured that Celtic are after Ghanaian international striker Antoine Semenyo.

This site reported back in February that journalist Dean Jones claimed the club would need to pay around £15m for his services. Pete O’Rourke claimed in March it would be closer to £20m.

You would automatically assume that would rule us out of the running, but seven months on, and with the Bristol City striker entering the last year of his contract, it seems the club are still interested in him.

That’s according to the Sunderland Echo.

Semenyo made 32 appearances last season for The Robins scoring just 8 goals.

And that, for me, is where our interest should end.

That scoring record of one goal every four games is simply not good enough.

The season before? Fifty appearances and only five goals. He simply does not have a pedigree good enough to become a Celtic striker in my opinion.

He was capped in the summer by Ghana and made his international debut in the African Cup of Nations qualifier win against Madagascar in June.

And then that leads back to my original point.

Just how would he get in our team ahead of Kyogo or Giakoumakis. Unless he is being earmarked to play in the left-wing role?

And even then he would have to compete against Jota, Maeda and possibly even Mikey Johnston.

As I said, it’s a strange one and I think that it is one the club should leave well alone.
