UEFA vice president Michele Uva has given an update on how he expects league campaigns across Europe to be finished in light of the Coronavirus epidemic.

Football in Scotland has been postponed for the foreseeable future as the number of cases within the UK and indeed worldwide continues to grow and grow. It was previously stated by UEFA that they wanted all club domestic football to be finished by June 30th, so that we could have some level of normality when it came to the time for 2020/21 plans to be put in place.

Now though, it seems as if those rules are set to be relaxed. Speaking over the weekend, vice president Vel said that leagues will be given as long as they want to complete their respective campaign:

“It is not a matter of our competence, it will be each league to decide The only question concerns those players who are due to expire on their contracts or loans as of June 30th, but it does not concern UEFA which will only ask for a list of teams that will participate in the next European cups by a certain date.”

So by the sounds of it, the league campaign could go on forever, but it’s only really the various competitions in 2020/21 that UEFA seem to be caring about, and in my mind that’s a good thing, because hopefully it might force some sort of action one way or another.

Would you care if the 2019/20 title and 9-in-a-row had an asterisk next to it?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Much like there is talk in England about giving Liverpool the title because of the vast gap between them and the chasing pack, the same could be said about Celtic and the rest of the teams in the Scottish Premiership.

So either Celtic are simply awarded the title and as a result our place in next season’s Champions League, or the SPFL decides that games are going to have to be played and completed and we can just get on with winning the last few games to seal the title anyway.
