Mortiz Bauer won’t be moving to Celtic despite reported interest in the player on Thursday.

The Daily Mail said yesterday morning that Brendan Rodgers had lodged an enquiry with Stoke City for the Austrian international, despite only recently signing a new contract at the club.

Now it seems almost certain he won’t be coming after starting a Stoke City U23s match against Manchester United tonight.

The right-back would have been an excellent alternative option to Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa, who have both received criticism for lapse defending over the last 12 months.

It’s an area that the Hoops could undoubtedly improve in but with no other names linked with a switch to Glasgow in the final few hours of the transfer window, it seems unlikely we’ll be strengthening the position.

The optimist in me would say that the reported deal for Moussa Dembele could free up funds for strengthening elsewhere… but we know what Celtic are like.
