Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers believes an apology is required from Dedryck Boyata before he takes his place in the Celtic first-team squad this week.

The defender had been demoted to training with the Development Squad after a transfer bust-up and a very public drama involving his agent, who has dragged the Hoops through the press over the past couple of weeks.

However, Rodgers revealed after Saturday’s clash with Partick Thistle that he is set to return to first-team training, as long as he apologises to his teammates and other Celtic staff.

Asked by The Daily Mail whether Boyata needs to say sorry, the Celtic boss said:

Whatever has been said will be internal but of course before anyone will join the group that will always have to be the case to staff and to players. When he joins the group that will be the case.

If Dedryck is still a Celtic player, of course I want to have him involved.. He’s been with us for a couple of years and I know he’s a good guy. Everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes it’s not the way in modern life, but people need a chance to redeem themselves.

Rodgers also stated that he had a long chat with the player last week, which has apparently been the catalyst for his imminent first-team inclusion.

There’s even a chance he plays on Thursday night in Lithuania, when Celtic take on FK Suduva in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League.
