Manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Celtic were ready to smash their transfer record to sign winger Patrick Roberts from Manchester City.

The England Under-20 international instead returned to Celtic Park on a season-long loan in the final week of the transfer window. That followed a previous outstanding eighteen-month temporary stay while helping the club towards four trophies.

“We would have broken our transfer record for Patrick,” Rodgers told the Glasgow Evening Times.”We wanted to find the deal that would get him back here. But he’s a Manchester City player.

“We could have offered them £30m and they would have said no,” he added. “They didn’t want to sell. So the best option was to get him back on loan.”
