Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has launched a scathing attack on the actions of Motherwell after they controversially scored against the Hoops on Sunday afternoon.

Gboly Ariyibi fired in an effort past Scott Bain during the 4-1 win over the Steelmen at Celtic Park after James Scott had refused to give the ball back to the Hoops following the ball going out of play because of injury.

It left supporters at Celtic Park absolutely fuming, and rightly so.

Rodgers wasn’t much happier following the game, speaking to The Scottish Sun, he said:

The right-back, in fairness, has tried to throw it back into the space for Kieran to run into, but the young striker has taken it and attacked the goal and everyone sort of stopped.

After that Motherwell had an opportunity to do something in the spirit of the game, but chose not to and were actually pressing for an equaliser.

Referees get criticised a lot, but you have to shine a light into the players at Motherwell. It was a real disappointing act on a sporting field that you don’t see so much now.

That’s where the credit comes for my players. It was a real injustice. We are obviously disappointed with the action, but I’m so proud of the players with the way they got the win.

He knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s played in games before. He’s old enough to play and start, so there’s no excuse.

Thankfully the stolen goal did not end up impacting the result of the match, but it had a spoiling effect on what was an entertaining encounter and Stephen Robinson should be ashamed of his side.

It’s not a situation you see often in football and clearly young James Scott has a lot of learning to do about what constitutes acceptable behaviour in senior football.

Celtic persevered and eventually punished the visitors thanks to exquisite goals from Odsonne Edouard and Oliver Burke and remain eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
