Relegated English Championship side Reading are stepping up their attempts to sign Celtic striker Gary Hooper.

Royals manager Nigel Adkins is keen on a reunion with a player who previously served under him for Scunthorpe United until arriving at Parkhead in a £2.4 deal three years ago. Adkins had also been interested in recruiting the free-scoring 25-year-old marksman during his spell in charge of Southampton.

As yet unconfirmed reports are suggesting that Hooper has already met with representatives from Reading over the past few days as they work on improving their squad under billionaire Russian owner Anton Zingarevich.

Elsewhere, Hull City have rejected suggestions of having a £4m bid turned down for Hooper as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.
