Send him back! McAvennie’s verdict on Celtic stopper

|

It has been well documented that Shane Duffy has his problems on the pitch and tough personal issues off it.  A move to a new team during a global pandemic, the passing of his father and living in Scotland without his family is enough to distract anyone from their duties in a normal job but a professional footballer, under the microscope of the Glasgow goldfish bowl in this season of all seasons, this was always going to be an unforgiving time for any new footballer joining Celtic.

Yet more pundit’s are having their say on Shane Duffy and it’s not as if the defender doesn’t recognise that there have been shortfalls in his game lately. In fact he even addressed that himself before the revelations about his personal predicaments so for Frank McAvennie and Simon Donnelly to come out and “advise” that Celtic should send the Republic of Ireland stopper back is either tasteless or just poor timing.

Duffy needs support now, not more lambasting from ex-Celtic players. Speaking to the Celtic Huddle podcast and transcribed by a Scottish media source, McAvennie said, “I would send him back.”.  This sentiment was backed up by Donnelly, “I think he has struggled. In the last couple of games, he scored a fantastic header and you are thinking ‘right kick on’.

“But when the tide turns at the weekend, these mistakes surface again.

“The one with Julien, I couldn’t believe what I was watching at the time. The Hearts lad almost goes in and scores and that could have potentially been the winner.

“Yeah I would maybe cut my losses and look to strengthen there again.”

Personally, I don’t think the Celtic board, or Neil Lennon for that matter, are of a mind to waste £2m by sending the big defender back to Brighton but with the window just around the corner, we shall soon find out.
