The Scottish FA have dismissed reports that foreign referees could be introduced to officiate Scottish Premiership matches, as reported by Sky Sports.

It had previously been reported by The Daily Record that Celtic were leading calls to introduce officials from other countries to help bring stability to Scottish football’s disciplinary crisis.

Referees in Scotland have made high profile blunders on a consistent basis all season, with the latest horror show from Alan Muir at Ibrox last night further proof that they are not fit for purpose.

However, SFA sources have told Sky Sports that the foreign refs proposal is a non-starter and is not being seriously considered, brushing off Celtic’s wishes and again caving to a referee bloc that has far too much power currently.

The broadcaster does report that solutions are being sought with regards to the retrospective compliance process, but it seems we will have to endure the horrendous decisions of Scotland’s tiny group of referees for much longer yet.

Celtic should try and bring more clubs on board to the idea. It makes perfect sense to increase the pool of potential referees, with current whistlers from the Glasgow area far too prominent in the biggest matches.

Last night’s horrendous refereeing performance at Ibrox won’t be the last one this season and the longer they show themselves up, the more noise will increase that permanent change needs to come.
