There certainly has been a flurry of activity over the past few days in terms of the Celtic manager position. And with Jesse Marsch playing the ‘hokey cokey’ in the last 24 hours ruling himself in and then out, the bookies candidates list is starting to look like a who’s who of  world football.

Marsch described being linked with the Celtic job as an ‘honour’ when speaking to BBC Sport yesterday, “I’ve heard [about the links]. It’s an honour for me,”

“Three or four years ago, being linked with a club like Celtic would literally be an impossibility for me. And now that this is where I am, I always just try to look at it in terms of, ‘what would the project look like?’

No more than 24 hours later, Marsch seemingly back tracked on his comments and reiterated his determination to remain at RB Salzburg. When speaking to the media today, Marsch said,  “My work here is definitely not done, we have a lot of fun together.

“With the board and the group with Stephan (rider, managing director) and Christoph (friend, sports director), with my coaching staff and the team.

“You will see what the next steps are. What is important for the club and for me. My family is very happy in Salzburg. We have made many friends. It is not necessary to take a step.

This has led to a flurry of activity in the bookmakers market as Marsch entered the bookies top 5 at 16/1 to be named next Celtic manager knocking long term favourite, Eddie Howe, out of the top runners.

Interestingly, two new names have creeped into the bookies list with Pepe Guardiola’s protégé, Domenec Torrent, entering the fray at 25/1 just behind Martin O’Neill and Rafa Benitez.  Another shock entry is English 2018/19 Treble winner Vincent Kompany.

The former Belgian international took over as Head Coach of Anderlecht in August 2020, signing a four year deal with the struggling Belgian giants so it would take a hefty compensation package to free up Kompany should the Celtic board be of a mind to make a move for him.
