Former Dundee defender Steven Caulker has been linked with a move to two clubs this week, so if Celtic are to make a move for the 26-year-old, now is the time.

Caulker joined Dundee in February, making 17 appearances for the club and proving he still has the ability to play at a good level week-to-week after a frustrating time at Queens Park Rangers.

Triggering a clause in his contract, he left the Dees at the end of the summer transfer window, meaning he can register elsewhere before January.

He appears to have put personal problems behind him and now clubs in England and in Europe are showing interest.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Arsenal Kyiv, who play in the Ukrainian top-flight were eager to sign him, with the player himself flying home from talks to consider his future.

Yesterday, West London Sport reported that Aston Villa were ready to throw their hat into the ring too.

Even since before he arrived in Scotland many have tipped him to reunite with former boss Brendan Rodgers at Celtic Park and it’s not as if we’re flush with defensive options right now.

The pair worked together at Swansea City and Rodgers hasn’t been shy is speaking of his fondness for the player over the last 12 months, especially in the wake of a revealing interview with the player in The Guardian.

The downside of signing him now would be that he could not feature in European action for the Hoops until after the next registration window in January.

However, he could be an excellent bargain buy with a long-term future. With Dedryck Boyata’s situation unclear beyond January and Filip Benkovic only at the club on loan, bringing him in now could be a great bit of business.
