Celtic are on the verge of signing midfielder Scott Brown up to a new contract after both the player and the manager confirmed a deal is close last week.

The player himself revealed to STV that it was ‘just a matter of time’ until a deal is signed, with Brendan Rodgers also saying a new contract will be announced ‘pretty soon’ in his St Mirren pre-match press conference.

His current contract at the club expires at the end of this season but it’s clear both parties are eager to extend that further despite the midfielder now being 33 years of age.

Clearly in the twilight of his career, Brown is arguably still the most important player in Rodgers’ starting eleven.

It’s hard to imagine that any of the success brought to the club over the last seven seasons would have been possible without the captain’s influence.

He’s kept Celtic ticking more than anyone else for years and years now.

Hopefully it’s all agreed as soon as possible. We’d love to see him get even more involved on the coaching side too having worked with the development squad for a while now.
