It was really only a matter of time before the rumours started. Jose Mourinho to Celtic! No one would believe it, of course. For Mourinho’s salary alone could run a small country and then some.

Speaking on The Transfer Window podcast hosts Ian McGarry and Duncan Castles discussed where ex Spurs boss, Jose Mourinho, would end up and made a stunning revelation that Mourinho’s camp was approached first by Celtic.

Castles, a reporter for various national newspapers revealed, “He has been handling approaches and offers since that dismissal. My information is that the first of those approaches came from Celtic Football Club who are in need of significant managerial change and in need of a change of fortune to get themselves back on top of the heap and in Scotland after Steven Gerrard guided rangers to the Scottish title by a significant margin.

Would you take Mourinho as new Celtic boss?

YES

NO

“My understanding is that his response to that approach was to tell Celtic, I’m not ready to coach now.”

Castles also revealed that as part of the compensation package from his dismissal by Spurs is that Mourinho’s salary must be paid in full for one year. If Mourinho landed a job and the salary was not on a par of that of Spurs, then the London club must make up that shortfall making a deal for the Portuguese affordable for the Hoops, at least for one year only.

The fan reaction to Mourinho turning down the opportunity to manager the Hoops remains to be seen but this apparent approach does tell us two things. The Howe deal is either on hold or dead and at least there is movement among the Celtic board to seek out new targets.
