The chat around the Celtic managers vacancy has been long reported on and it looks like, if you listen to the newspaper talk, we are nearing the beginning of the end on this particular chapter of this sorry season with Enzo Maresca being widely reported as the favourite to take over from departed manager, Neil Lennon, this summer.

Maresca has had a “travelled” playing career having represented eleven clubs in his 20 years as a professional footballer.  The Italian started his career in the youth ranks of Milan and Cagliari before signing professionally for English club West Brom.

He spent two years at The Baggies before moving onto Italian giants, Juventus where he picked up his first ever domestic honours winning the Serie A in 2001/02 and the Supercoppa Italia in 2003.  Without doubt, the most successful spell the ex midfielder enjoyed was at Spanish club Sevilla where Maresca picked up major European and domestic honours in 2005/06 winning the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup and the following season Maresca picked up the Copa Del Ray, Supercopa de Espana and retained the UEFA Cup.

Maresca retired from professional football in 2017 where he joined the backroom staff of Ascoli and  has enjoyed further spells at Sevilla and Wet Ham before Pep Guardiola head hunted him for his current role at Manchester City. Maresca is clearly a winner with vast experience in European football but has yet to test himself as the man in charge of any football club.

Reports have surfaced this morning that, rather incredibly, Maresca has overnight entered the bookies reckoning to take over the Aberdeen hot seat that was vacated by Derek McInnes last night. It is not known if the Dons board have made any contact with the Italian but there would be huge embarrassment suffered by the Celtic board if Aberdeen stole a march and captured the Italian.
