Former Celtic striker and current BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has criticised Odsonne Edouard for his inconsistent performances, believing that the Hoops should expect better from such a big money signing.

Edouard was ineffective against Salzburg on Thursday night and has scored just one goal in over a month’s worth of matches.

It has left many fans and pundits questioning his ability to carry the Hoops on his own back with no recognised back-up available right now, perhaps an unfair request given he is still only 20 years old.

Writing in his Daily Record column this weekend, prior to the clash against Hibernian, Sutton said of the forward:

Odsonne Edouard is going to have to liven up as well. The Frenchman has shown in flashes but it’s not enough. He’s a young player but he’s been far too inconsistent and you can’t afford to have £10m players putting in performances like that one on Thursday night.

Edouard was woeful. It said it all that the only time the ball stuck up top was when Filip Benkovic played as a front man in the closing stages.

I doubt Sutton will have been much more impressed with his performance at Easter Road, again ineffective and unable to link up with his teammates in the final third.

With 13 goals this season it’s a mistake to say that the young Frenchman hasn’t contributed but his purple patches of scoring need to be more regular than they have been.

Key to that will be bringing in support for him in the January transfer window. With the right blend he can absolute destroy the opposition in Scotland, we know that from some of his goals in the past.
