The damage on the pitch can be repaired, but what about from the fans?

With twenty five league games to go there is plenty of time for Neil Lennon to turn around poor performances on the pitch into results. As we head into a period of the season where Celtic traditionally pick up the majority of their points, there is a a general feeling amongst some fans that it may already be too late, especially with results across the water not looking like changing anytime soon.

About a week ago, I wrote a piece about how Celtic tend to have successful Christmas periods which help the team kick on after the winter break.  Many seasons during this ten in a row run have depended on that form and this season is no different. The only differing factor this term is that Rangers form usually drops after New Year but there are no signs of that happening.

Rangers have only dropped two points in the league, conceded three goals (none at home) and have scored forty one goals.  At this point in time that is championship winning form.  That coupled with Celtic’s poor performances has the Celtic fans worried, and so they should be.

The only saving grace is that there are still plenty of points to play for, including three Glasgow Derbies so this season CAN be salvaged.

But I am starting to wonder if the relationship with the fans and the team/manager be?

The reaction of the fans to this title challenge (it is a challenge, no amount of denying it will make it less so) has been poor at best but poisonous at worst.  Online rumours being spread by the fans speculating about Neil Lennon’s mental health, alcohol addiction, punch ups with Scott Brown and fall outs with Edouard help no one and if you think that players and managers do not see this then you are being naive.

Ryan Christie and Leigh Griffiths have deactivated their Twitter accounts because of online abuse and Scott Brown has received personal attacks about the death of his sister on numerous occasions over social media. Admittedly, these attacks have not been from the Celtic fans, I am merely pointing out that players pay attention to what’s being said on social media and it will have an affect on them.

We have all had our say. Some of us may not think Lennon is the man to change it, some of us do. But it is now time to stop the attacks. We have a lot of football ahead of us and a Championship to win.  REAL support happens when the chips are down. Starting tonight, it’s time to get behind the team and show them that.  After ELEVEN trophies in a row, it is the least they deserve.
