The English summer transfer window may already be closed, but we’re already getting silly Celtic stories in advance of the January window opening next year.

Hoops defender Kieran Tierney has been linked with a ‘cut-price’ exit to Tottenham Hotspur by The Daily Mirror today, a transfer they say could be forced by the club’s exit from the UEFA Champions League.

Apparently we have been hit so ‘hard in the pocket’ after the defeat to AEK Athens, meaning we could more than half our valuation of the left-back, to £10m.

Meanwhile, The Express report that we’re ‘cash strapped’, again reporting that Tottenham are interested in the player.

Of all the ridiculous transfer rumours this summer, this may be the worst yet.

As most Celtic fans know, the club don’t budget for UEFA Champions League cash specifically and while our lack of participation in the group stages of this year’s tournament is undoubtedly a financial blow, it doesn’t suddenly make our biggest and brightest stars cheap meat in the transfer market.

The club clearly value Tierney highly and just because we’ve missed out on the big competition for the first time in three seasons, that won’t change anytime soon.

He signed a six-year contract just last year don’t forget. £10m will never be enough, not in the immediate future anyway.
