As Celtic look to progress tomorrow night in the Champions League, the club looks to now have a firm footing in the transfer window as they seal the signing of €3m right back Aurélio Buta.

Clearly more work needs done to strengthen the back line and even with Carl Starfelt about to join the squad over the next few days, speaking to Vital CelticThe Celtic Way‘s Anthony Haggerty has said that Celtic still require two centre backs to really not only solidify the Hoops back line, but to also take pressure off young Stephen Welsh.

Welsh has done tremendously well since making the breakthrough at the tail end of last season but Haggerty reckons with the new season about to start, there could be a mistake in the youngster as the pressure is ramped up, “We’ve got Julian coming back from injury, but there’s no definitive date on when that will be.

“Then the other one that they have is Stephen Welsh, the young prospect.

“Stephen Welsh looks quite accomplished, he’s is getting better and better each game.

“He is still young and he’s still raw. And I think they (Celtic) might think that there’s maybe mistakes in Welsh when pressures really ramped up.

“He came in at the tail end of last season, when the league title was gone. So there wasn’t much as much pressure but you know the boy still impressed.

“But you know, we are going from scratch this time and there’s a massive pressure on you to win at Celtic.

“Draws and defeats are crisis time and they want to hit the ground running in every competition. So I think that they need two centre backs.”

Haggerty does make a great point. Welsh shows great promise and it is unfair on the young lad to expect him to be the material difference in the heart of the Celtic defence when he is just learning his trade.

With Postecoglou making clear his shopping list to the Celtic board, maybe adding another centre back to that would be a good idea.
