The focus for Celtic does seem to be strengthening their defence. From Aaron Hickey to Kenneth Paal, the Hoops have been linked to sign another defender and it is one that has former Scotland boss, Alex McLeish excited.

Speaking to the Football Insider, McLeish said that using the links the club already have with Manchester City is proving to be fruitful when trying to get signings thru the door.

The Hoops have had very good success using their City connections in the most recent past with signings like Jason Denayer and Patrick Roberts being extremely popular with the fans.

Ko Itakura seems to high on the priority list for Celtic boss, Ange Postecoglou and McLeish has sympathy for the big Aussie due to the size of the rebuild facing him,  “It can be very handy indeed.  If you have that contact then City have opened the door for that. They have had players before from City.

“It’s brilliant. I keep stressing the quality factor and Celtic will have to show their fans ‘we’ve got a cracker here’.

“That’s the test. The most important thing is if the player will fit the bill and can try to help and get Rangers pegged back immediately.

“It’s not easy for Postecoglou to come in and restructure a whole squad, it’s a massive task.”

By all accounts Itakura does come highly recommended after a successful 18 month spell at Groningen. City are reportedly keen to sell him on this transfer window and with Postecoglou having already sealed one defender in Osaze Urhoghide, Ko Itakura could be seen by Postecoglou as the final piece to solve Celtic’s central defensive problems.
