With the news breaking today of Celtic’s interest in Daizen Maeda looking like it will lead to a January move, the Japan international has revealed how he almost quit football to take up gymnastics.

Vital Celtic revealed back in JULY, that Celtic were linked with the 24 year old dynamic attacker and since then the speculation has been bubbling under the surface ever since.

More rumours surfaced just last month when Vital Celtic reported that J League journalist Dan Orlowitz again linked Maeda with a move to the east end of Glasgow and we also spoke of how a Japan based Celtic podcaster recommended the Hoops should sign Maeda when I posed a question to Liam from the Celtic Down Under podcast.

So this speculation is not new to regular readers of this blog but what we didn’t know was that Maeda almost (The Sun) quit football back in his early days as a professional, “When I was going through my education, I was watching the Olympics and I really enjoyed it.

“Football wasn’t going well for me at that time so I decided I would quit and do gymnastics instead.

“As I was about to quit football for good, my friends and family brought me back to the game I now love.

“They encouraged me not to give up and to work harder.

“I actually enjoyed the running part of football rather than the game at first. But then I discovered scoring goals was more fun!

“So I very nearly didn’t even try to make it as a footballer.”

And imagine if he did! If Celtic did make a move and sign Maeda, look at the player we could be getting. The boy looks class!
