Celtic defender Mark Wilson says the next few weeks will be crucial in the title race as his club look to close the gap on their Old Firm rivals.

“The matches over Christmas and the New Year game against Rangers will be a big challenge, especially for the new boys” – Mark Wilson

The Bhoys enter this weekend’s visit to Hamilton Academical on the back of a two-match lay-off and still in second position in the table, three points behind Rangers.

But that deficit will be wiped out should the visitors prevail at New Douglas Park as Rangers’ home game with St Mirren has already been called off.

“The Christmas period will be absolutely crucial for us and there are a lot of matches to get through,” Wilson told the Glasgow Evening Times. “There will be a bit of a pile-up of games and that will test the strength of the squad.

“The matches over Christmas and the New Year game against Rangers will be a big challenge, especially for the new boys,” he added. “But our squad has a lot of experience, despite a lot of the players being here only a short while.

“When it comes to big games, the team now know what to expect. It is just going out there and winning them that is the issue. A couple of times this season we`ve failed to do that, but now we have to make sure we step it up.”
