With the Sutton/Lennon gate farce continues and as the debate rages on (well it’s hardly a debate it’s downright ridiculous) Sutton had his say on the matter on BT Sports Football show with Darrel Currie.

Sutton was asked by Currie on the show what he made of the ban and Sutton, in his usual candid style, wasn’t holding back, “We don’t have long enough to go into great depth but I think Rangers are getting into dangerous territory. This is Trumpism at its finest.

“I still don’t really know the reason why I wasn’t allowed into Ibrox. The security issue? Two pundits going to work? I mean that’s absolutely ludicrous.

“Rangers allow 800 Celtic fans in and away fans in at every game. And I was in Ibrox last season when there were no fans and I was told I was unwelcome last season. As far as I can see and I can only speculate, what Rangers are saying is, if we don’t like what you say about us, we aren’t letting you in.

“It’s dangerous territory they’re getting into it. What if every football club across the country started to do that? I sit here every Friday morning with Ally and it’s back and forth, it’s light hearted banter. That’s all it is.

Where Rangers right to ban Sutton and Lennon?

YES

YES

NO

NO

“We don’t take ourselves too seriously. I can’t speak for Ally but  I know he doesn’t. We like a laugh and a joke. I’ve taken a battering in the last year because Celtic have been hopeless. And for the last decade Ally had to take a battering.  Unfortunately for him.

“I just think they’re getting into murky, murky waters with this as far as I can see, and I hope it stops.

“Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister they must be embarrassed by the way that their club is acting on this and I hope Rangers just do the right thing and put it right.”

Whether the Ibrox club see sense and start acting like grown ups remains to be seen but surprisingly, co pundit, Ally McCoist agreed with Chris warning that freedom of speech must be protected and compared the situation at Ibrox to that of a Communist regime, “Yeah I’ve got to say Chris I  found it very, very surprising. When I arrived at Ibrox last night looking forward to the game, I was expecting to see yourself and Neil and I was very, very surprised not to see the two of you.

“I think we’re going down a very dangerous route if we’re stopping freedom of speech. We turn into Beijing. We turn into Moscow. And so I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that everything can be resolved, hopefully very, very soon.

It remains to be seen whether or not Rangers are of a mind to do anything that makes sense these days, especially after the events of the last few weeks, but surely with the club happy to accept BT Sports TV money, they should also be willing to accept the pundits that report for them as well.

Regardless of the team they used to play for.
