Cristian Gamboa has dropped the strongest hint yet that he wants to be at Celtic for next season in an interview with the Celtic View.

The pacy defender hasn’t always nailed a place down in our side and there seemed to be growing speculation around his future with a decision expected after the World Cup – which he is heading for with Costa Rica.

It looks now, though, that he is going to be staying put – or at least plans to be – with him telling the magazine – via the club’s official site – exactly that:

“Right now, I just want to play, be fit and be ready for the national team and for Celtic when the season starts.”

The Verdict

I’m always for players that want to play for our club staying around but I do wonder whether Brendan sees a future for the rapid full-back.

I think perhaps this summer he will stay on but, past this campaign coming, it might not be such a surprise to see us let him go.

That is, of course, unless he has a stormer in 2018/19.

  • I find it hard to criticise Gamboa, he has performed well enough when given the chance. I do feel he deserves a better crack at the whip this time around. Unless Brendan is going to give Ralston his chance then I’d prefer Gamboa in at right back if Lustig is not there, before playing others out of position.
However what can I say, “In Brendan we trust” Hail Hail

  • I like Lustig but last season he was exposed by any pacey player, Kingsley Coman destroyed him in the Bayern Game, i have always seen right back as one of the weaker positions, and i am not saying Gamboa is the better player, but he deserves a stint in the matchday squad.
