One of the men instrumental in bringing Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata into the Belgian international fold has urged him to think carefully about his next career decision, believing it’s a crucial one for his playing future for both club and country.

Boyata is currently resting during a well-earned break after a long World Cup campaign with Belgium. The defender played three games in the group stages, helping his country into the knock-out stages of the competition where they eventually finished third.

One of the figures important to bringing him into the Belgian set-up in 2015 was coach Vital Borkelmans, who was influential in persuading then manager Marc Wilmots to include in him in international squads.

Now he’s warned the 27-year-old not to give up a good thing at Celtic too quickly.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Borkelmans said:

I know it is a vital time for Dedryck with his future. He has only a year left of his Celtic contract.

It is certain there will be many clubs now interested in him.

But Dedryck is playing every week for Celtic and also in the Champions League. Sure, he could earn more money elsewhere and get a higher profile, but what happens if he goes to Italy, Spain or to England and doesn’t play so much? That would badly affect him for Belgium.

Boyata has certainly enjoyed his time at the Hoops working under Brendan Rodgers, who trusts him to perform at the highest level, despite trepidation from supporters.

Securing him to the best years of his career would allow him to improve further in the Celtic first-team. You can see in his game that confidence levels are improving and he clearly has good chemistry with his teammates.

Leaving that behind for a more illustrious league may be tempting for the defender, but will he heed advice from one of his former coaches and commit his future to life in Glasgow?
