Celtic players are being blamed by Police Scotland for causing disturbances amongst the Rangers support in the wake of our 1-0 victory over Steven Gerrard’s side in September, as reported by The Daily Record.

The paper report that authorities are seeking a crackdown on players doing a lap of honour after derby victories, although we all know there’s been little chance for Rangers to do that in recent years.

The report details that during the Hoops’ victory lap in September, Rangers fans surged forward in anger in an attempt to get on the pitch, knocking over wheelchair users in the process.

A review of away support numbers and segregation arrangements for future games will now also take place.

As quoted by The Daily Record, a superintendent’s memo to match day officers said: “I am firmly of the view that there is a clear link between the actions of the Celtic players (which immediately inflamed an already delicate situation) and subsequent response of the Rangers fans.”

Sorry… but what?

This is an absolutely ridiculous assertion. Apparently having the temerity to merely celebrate a vital win against our rivals is now too much for police forces in this country.

If the away fans can’t keep their cool after losing a football match, is that really Celtic’s fault? It’s not as if Brendan Rodgers’ squad were going out of their way to provoke the thugs looking to cause trouble.

As attending fans will know, laps of honour have become commonplace at Celtic Park when Rangers are there or not.
