Celtic are hoping to receive clearance to sign Aston Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland on a six-month loan deal within the next couple of days.

Manager Neil Lennon watched the Republic of Ireland international making a rare start in Villa’s recent defeat at Liverpool.

The Hoops chief is keen to bring him to Parkhead but his chances will rest upon a meeting between Ireland’s representatives and Villa owner Randy Lerner on Thursday.

It is expected that Lerner will be asked to meet half of Ireland’s £68,000-a-week wage before allowing a move to Glasgow.
