Transfer season is months away and already we have talk of the club dipping its toe in the market.

Not unexpected to be honest as Ange Postecoglou did say weeks ago that he had already identified targets for the January window, and last night the big news dropped with this update from Daily Mail journalist, Stephen McGowan.

McGowan claims that the club are looking to sign a left-sided centre-back as there has been interest shown in Stephen Welsh over the last couple of windows and it looks like Ange Postecoglou’s forward planning could be key in making sure we have ample cover in the back line with an apparent move for Vissel Kobe’s Yuki Kobayashi.

With Carl Starfelt still out with a long-term injury, Postecoglou will be keen to avoid the kind of centre-half patch-up job he had to apply when Celtic paid a visit to St Mirren and lost 2-0 with the inexperienced pairing of Moritz Jenz and Stephen Welsh.

Whilst Jenz has performed well for the club this season, he has been partnered with the ever-reliable Cameron Carter-Vickers but when the American powerhouse is out of the team as he was a few weeks ago, the pairing of Welsh and Jenz does look vulnerable.

Postecoglou has not only sent a message of intent to the fans with this development but also to our rivals.

Even at the top of the summit, we will not rest on our laurels. We will strengthen.

And that should strike fear into Scottish football.

Who were Celtic’s most expensive transfers these seasons?
