Celtic are leading the push to bring foreign referees in to officiate Scottish football matches after heated discussions between clubs and officials at Hampden on Monday, as reported by The Daily Record.

Representatives of all 12 Scottish Premiership clubs were in attendance for showdown talks with SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell, compliance officer Clare Whyte and referees boss John Fleming.

The Record report that clubs have now been given a mandate to request an overhaul of the current disciplinary system, with changes potentially in place for the start of the new season.

That includes the possibility of bringing in foreign referees to take charge of matches, an idea driven by Celtic that is now garnering support amongst rival clubs, say the paper.

It’s extraordinary stuff that could see Scottish football changed for the better, forever.

That the Hoops are using our clout to bring in radical reform of a troubled process is fantastic news and supporters would likely welcome the addition of foreign refs to take over from the current group of officials, who are not trusted whatsoever.

Change never comes easy in Scottish football, but if this could all be in place for next season, including other needed alterations to the disciplinary process, it would be fantastic news.
