Celtic are interested in signing Porto right-back prospect Fernando Fonseca this month, according to The Scottish Sun.

With Mikael Lustig approaching the end of his contract and losing form over the last 18 months, Celtic are on the hung for a new long-term replacement for the Swedish international.

The Scottish Sun reckon that Fonseca is a candidate for that role.

The paper say he is a former £2m target for Juventus but that he is now available for less than that having failed to put himself into first-team contention at the Portuguese giants.

The 21-year-old has made just one senior appearance for Porto, but has 19 appearances in the top-flight there after spending last season out on loan at Estoril.

The lack of football doesn’t inspire me with much hope he can come in and compete for places immediately, although he does have 12 U21 caps with Portugal, which is a good sign he has a bright future in the game considering the quality of their youth prospects.

Can he come in and prove to be a better option than both Lustig and our own right-back prospect Anthony Ralston?

As we approach the final week or so of the January transfer window, this one is worth a watch.
